British clocks going back in winter

British Summer Time (BST) has finished just now. The time differences between the UK and Japan is 9 hours from now on, and our long winter darkness has started.

Modern 'Summer Time' (also 'Daylight Saving Time' - DST in American English) was first proposed in 1907 by an English builder and outdoorsman, William Willett. An avid golfer, he invented it for that he disliked cutting short his round at dusk.
Actually, one of the most important Founding Fathers of the United States, Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) suggested it first in 1784, however.

'Summer Time' saw its first widespread use on 30 April to 1 October 1916 started in Germany as a wartime measure aimed at conserving coal, and so did Britain on 21 May to 1 October 1916.
